Astra is a fine example of the "new generation" lightweight, hollow molded, sailplanes. From the construction, it is obvious the designers know how to make a very strong and still light structure. The Astra is completely prefabricated from the factory and virtually ready to fly. The fiberglass, foam core, molded wing is accurately made in CNC molds. After wing is removed from the molds a CNC machine is used to cut out the center part. From there, the transition balsa ribs are then added for stiffness and accuracy. The rear of D-box is faced with some light balsa shear webbing. This construction technique gives you perfect airfoil shape at the leading edge which is the most important part for the wing. The elegant, gel-coated Fiberglass/Carbon Fiber fuselage with molded firewall is not only strong but speeds your building time. Another nice feature is removable, molded, V-Tail. Just simply plug it in, hook up your control surfaces and go fly. All the surfaces are pre-painted in the molds for flawless external finish. The whole model uses live hinges for all its movable surfaces. This fully built sailplane needs only a couple of evenings for assembly.
